Pune Porsche Crash: Demand for Police Commissioner's Transfer Over Corruption Claims

In a significant move, retired bureaucrat Arun Bhatia has approached the Maharashtra Human Rights Commission (MHRC), seeking the transfer of Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. This action stems from the handling of a tragic incident on May 19, where a Porsche car accident in Pune resulted in the deaths of two individuals. Bhatia's letter to the MHRC chairman highlights concerns over alleged police corruption and maladministration aimed at protecting the driver involved in the fatal crash.

Call for Pune Cops Transfer After Crash

Bhatia's communication with the MHRC underscores a deep-seated issue of corruption within the ranks of governance and law enforcement, which he believes has compromised public safety and trust. According to Bhatia, this incident is not an isolated case but a reflection of a broader, systemic problem where corruption has become institutionalized, leaving citizens vulnerable and without recourse.

The retired bureaucrat's allegations are grave. He claims that police officials and senior doctors, including the Chief Medical Officer of Sassoon, the largest government hospital in Pune, conspired to shield the culprit. Among the accusations are delays in blood sample collection for alcohol testing, tampering with evidence, and undue delays in recording witness statements. These actions, Bhatia argues, deviated from standard investigative procedures, allowing time for those responsible to fabricate a defense.

Further complicating matters, Bhatia mentions that despite Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar dismissing the mishandling of the blood test as a "procedural lapse," there were indications of political interference in the case. This interference allegedly extended to influencing appointments within the health sector, as seen in the appointment of the Chief Medical Officer based on political recommendations.

The case that triggered Bhatia's letter involved a Porsche crashing into a two-wheeler in Kalyani Nagar, Pune, leading to the death of two IT professionals. The vehicle was allegedly driven by a drunk minor. In the aftermath, the minor was sent to an observation home while his father and grandfather were arrested for allegedly coercing their driver into taking responsibility for the accident.

Bhatia's demands are clear: for an impartial investigation to proceed, he insists on the immediate transfer of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar out of Pune and calls for accountability among senior officials for their subordinates' actions. He also seeks punitive measures against those responsible for appointing officials based on corrupt practices.

This incident has not only raised questions about law enforcement integrity but also about how deeply corruption may be embedded within various government departments. As this case unfolds, it serves as a critical test of Maharashtra's commitment to justice and human rights.
