Protest Against Ropeway In Jammu's Katra On Dec 18, Devotees Going To Mata Vaishno Devi May Face Trouble
Katra town is set to experience a complete shutdown on 18 December. This action is in protest against the proposed Rs 250-crore ropeway project connecting Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat, leading to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The decision was made by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti, which includes local shopkeepers, pony operators, porters, and other stakeholders.
The ropeway project has sparked controversy since last November when the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board unveiled plans for a cable car system. This system aims to provide a shorter and more convenient route for pilgrims. However, locals are concerned that it will bypass Katra entirely, affecting businesses and services that rely on pilgrim traffic.

Local Businesses at Risk
Many in Katra fear economic repercussions if the ropeway diverts pilgrims away from their town. Horse, pony, and palki (palanquin) owners have expressed concerns about potential losses due to this project. They argue that their livelihoods depend heavily on the current flow of pilgrims through Katra.
Karan Singh, a committee member and Congress worker, highlighted that opposition might lessen if adequate compensation were provided. However, vague promises from authorities have only intensified public discontent. The lack of clear commitments has left many feeling uncertain about their future.
Protests and Demonstrations
The Sangharsh Samiti has called for a total shutdown of businesses in Katra on 18 December. Public transport and markets will also be closed as part of this protest. On the eve of the shutdown, hundreds marched through the town, chanting slogans against the project.
Among those showing support for the protesters was former minister Jugal Kishore Sharma. His presence underscored the widespread concern over the potential impact of the ropeway on Katra's economy and community.
