Probe finds Kashmir unrest is being run from jail

Two of the cellphones seized were from Masarat Alam, the dreaded separatist who has been responsible for causing an unrest in Kashmir since 2010.

Further proof of militants in Kashmir taking instructions from handlers in Pakistan came to light following the seizure of mobile phones from a jail in Baramulla district.

Following a tip-off, authorities seized mobile phones from prisoners that included both militants and stone pelters. It was found that these persons were making calls on WhatsApp from jail. The data analysed suggests that these persons were taking instructions from Pakistan on how to further the unrest in the Valley.

Two of the cellphones seized were from Masarat Alam, the dreaded separatist who has been responsible for causing an unrest in Kashmir since 2010. He was the brain behind the 2010 unrest and was put in jail, only to be later released by the Peoples Democratic Party government in 2015. He was however re-arrested, following pressure by the Union government in 2016.

The crackdown comes a week after terrorists attacked the house of a jail officer and threatened his family with dire consequences if he did not stop harassing the inmates of the Baramulla jail. It may be recalled that terrorists had also burnt down the car of the jail official.
