President's wife Suvra Mukherjee passes away: How Rahul Gandhi, Kejriwal, others reacted

New Delhi, Aug 18: Suvra Mukherjee, the First Lady of India, passed away on Tuesday, Aug 18. 74-year-old Mrs Mukherjee was admitted to Army Hospital on Aug 7.

She suffered a cardiac arrest. She was in the ICU of the hospital. Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed that the First Lady passes away at 10:51 am.

In its official tweet on micro-blogging site Twitter, Rashtrapati Bhavan wrote, "It is informed with deep sorrow that First Lady Suvra Mukherjee passed away this morning. She left for her heavenly abode at 10.51 am."

Suvra Mukherjee tied knots with Pranab Mukherjee on July 13, 1957. She was a vocalist of Rabindra Sangeet and founded the 'Geetanjali Troupe'.

She was also a talented painter, who had many group and solo exhibitions to her credit. She wrote two books in Bengali -- Chokher Aloey and Chena Achenai Chin.

Her demise saddened the country. Condolences poured in on Twitter. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and many others condoled her death.
