New govt will put economy back on track, says Pranab at joint session of parliament

New Delhi, June 9: President Pranab Mukherjee addressed the joint session of parliament on Monday morning. The President's address began at 11 am in the Central Hall of Parliament.

The greatest challenge of the new NDA government is to eliminate poverty, said the president. The government should instill confidence in bureaucracy, he said.

A national mission for E-Bhasha will be launched, said president. Also, the government will improve strategic ties with China and Japan.

The president stressed that conservation of environment will be a priority of the government and it will effectively tackle terrorism.

He said the government is committed to ensure 33 percent reservation for women in parliament, referring to the Women's Reservation Bill.

He said the government will launch a "beti bachao, beti badhao" (save girl child, grow girl child) and will launch a mass campaign to save the girl child.

Referring to the incidents of sexual violence against women, the president said: "We will have a policy of zero tolerance of violence against women."

He said the criminal justice system will be revisited to see its effectiveness in curbing crimes against women.

The government should tackle infiltration, he said. The government will formulate rules for Lokpal and also, take steps to bring back black money, he said. The new government will revamp railways and modernise courts, he said. Government will launch a diamond quadrilateral project of high-speed trains, said Pranab.

The president said that the new NDA government will make all efforts to control inflation and one of the key focus area of the new government is to nurse the economy back into high growth mode. The government will chalk out infra development plans for next ten years, said the president.

The government will promote labour intensive manufacturing and FDI, which will create more jobs, he said.

He also stressed on the importance of reviving PDS. The government will set up IIMs and IITs in every state and across the country, institutes like AIIMS will be set up, he said.
