Polling Officials Airlifted to Remote Kishtwar for LS Elections

Authorities have initiated the process of deploying polling officials and security personnel to the remote, snow-bound regions of Marwah and Warwan in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district, marking a significant step towards facilitating the upcoming parliamentary elections. On Friday, a total of 189 polling officials along with 69 police personnel were airlifted to these areas, which are part of the Udhampur-Kathua parliamentary constituency. This constituency is set to witness a keenly watched electoral battle on April 19, where 12 candidates, including Union Minister Jitendra Singh, will contest.

Polling Teams Airlifted to Kishtwar

Marwah, Warwan, and Machail represent the most isolated parts of Kishtwar, typically inaccessible for about four months annually due to heavy snowfall ranging between five to ten feet. In preparation for the elections, 188 security personnel were also airlifted on Thursday to ensure the security of 34 polling stations and strong rooms established in these regions.

The logistical feat was orchestrated under the guidance of District Election Officer Devansh Yadav, with approval from Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole. The operation aimed at the safe delivery of polling parties, election logistics, and materials to 34 designated polling booths. These include 19 in Marwah, 12 in Warwan, and four in Machail. The decision to advance the deployment was influenced by weather forecasts, highlighting the administration's proactive approach to overcoming geographical and climatic challenges.

Political parties have been notified in advance about the transportation of personnel and materials. Additionally, five intermediate strong rooms have been set up to securely store Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), thereby enhancing the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process. With preparations underway, security measures have been significantly bolstered. This includes deploying Indian Air Force's Mi-17 helicopters for transporting polling officers and establishing helipads to facilitate their movement.

The dispatch of polling staff is being carried out in phases, with priority given to reaching the most remote areas such as Marwah, Warwan, and Machail through airlifts. This meticulous planning ensures not only the effective transportation of election materials but also underscores a comprehensive strategy to ensure that every voter in these far-flung areas can participate in the democratic process. The efforts reflect a coordinated endeavor to maintain a robust electoral process despite challenging conditions.
