PM Modi's Poland Trip Sheds Light on Jamnagar's WWII Legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Poland has highlighted the historical ties between Gujarat and the eastern European nation. These connections date back to World War II when Jam Sahib Digvijaysinhji Jadeja, the ruler of Jamnagar, provided refuge to hundreds of Polish children. Modi paid tribute to a monument dedicated to Digvijaysinhji at Good Maharaja Square in Warsaw.

Modis Visit Highlights Jamnagar-Poland Ties

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reflected on the state's significant role in fostering India-Poland relations. He noted that Digvijaysinhji's act of kindness towards over 600 Polish refugee children during World War II is still remembered in Poland. "These children were provided with a good place to live, education, and all necessities of life including food," Patel stated in a post on X.

Historical Acts of Kindness

Rushikesh Patel, Gujarat government spokesperson and minister, also mentioned the noble deeds of the erstwhile Maharaja. The Polish children, who were brought out of the USSR, initially lived at a camp set up in Jamnagar-Balachadi. In 1945, they were relocated to Valivade near Kolhapur in Maharashtra, which became the largest settlement of Polish citizens in India during the war.

The Soviet Union declared an amnesty in 1941, allowing Polish children deported to Siberia during the 1939 war outbreak to leave Russia. General Sikorski, leading the Polish government at that time, sought assistance from British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This led to the establishment of a refugee camp at Jamnagar.

Recognition and Honours

In recognition of his humanitarian efforts, Digvijaysinhji was posthumously awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland in 2011. Additionally, Poland honoured him by naming a school after him. In 2016, fifty years after his death, Poland's Parliament unanimously adopted a special resolution honouring him.

The historical ties between Gujarat and Poland are not just remembered but celebrated through various honours and memorials. These acts have cemented a bond that continues to be acknowledged by both nations.

The visit by Prime Minister Modi underscores these enduring connections and highlights how historical acts of kindness can forge lasting international relationships.
