PM Modi Confirms Attendance at G7 Summit in Canada Following Invitation from Mark Carney

Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed his attendance at the G7 summit in Canada this month, following an invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. This invitation came during their first phone conversation, indicating Canada's desire to mend ties with India after tensions over the killing of a Khalistani separatist. The summit is scheduled for June 15-17 in Alberta.

PM Modi to Attend G7 Summit in Canada

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the strong people-to-people connections between India and Canada. Both leaders expressed a commitment to work together with renewed energy, driven by mutual respect and shared interests. Modi conveyed his eagerness to meet Carney at the summit.

India-Canada Relations

Relations between India and Canada deteriorated after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of India's involvement in the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. This led to diplomatic tensions, with India recalling its high commissioner and expelling Canadian diplomats. However, Carney's election victory in April sparked hopes for improved relations.

In recent months, security officials from both countries have resumed contact, exploring the possibility of appointing new high commissioners. India had accused Trudeau's government of allowing pro-Khalistani elements to operate from Canadian soil. Following Trudeau's departure, New Delhi expressed hope for rebuilding ties based on mutual trust.

G7 Summit Invitation

The invitation to Modi for the G7 Leaders Summit was extended by Carney during their phone call. Modi accepted the invitation over a week before the summit begins. The delay in inviting Modi had led to speculation about his participation, as he had attended all previous summits of the grouping.

A Canadian readout noted that Modi and Carney discussed the longstanding relationship between their countries, including significant commercial links. They agreed to continue law enforcement dialogue and address security concerns, looking forward to meeting at the G7 Leaders Summit later this month.

Global Challenges at G7

The G7 comprises the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan. Canada currently holds the presidency and is hosting the summit in this capacity. Discussions are expected to focus on pressing global challenges such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict and issues in West Asia.

Modi expressed his gratitude to Carney for the invitation via social media, congratulating him on his recent election victory. "As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour," Modi stated.

The downturn in India-Canada relations was attributed to Canada's allowance of extremist elements within its borders. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned this issue in March, emphasizing India's concerns over secessionist activities.

Carney's outreach to Modi signifies Ottawa's intent to repair diplomatic ties with New Delhi. Both leaders agreed to maintain contact and looked forward to their meeting at the upcoming summit.
