PM Modi's Plan for J-K Elections and Statehood Restoration Draws Mixed Responses

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir has sparked a wave of reactions across the political spectrum in the Union Territory, following his announcement regarding the forthcoming assembly elections and the restoration of statehood. During his address at a gathering at SKICC titled "Empowering Youth, Transforming J&K," Modi highlighted the significant turnout in the Lok Sabha elections and underscored the importance of local governance through elected representatives.

Mixed Reactions to J-K Statehood Plan

The Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and Apni Party have expressed their support for the Prime Minister's statement. DPAP's chief spokesperson, Salman Nizami, emphasized the people's eagerness for change and an elected government, citing recent participation in Lok Sabha elections as a testament to this desire. Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari lauded the announcement as a pivotal moment, bringing hope to the residents awaiting the fulfillment of promises made regarding statehood and democratic rights.

Conversely, the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have adopted a more cautious stance. NC's chief spokesperson, Tanvir Sadiq, pointed out that the Election Commission of India (ECI) is bound by the Supreme Court's directive to conduct assembly polls by September 30 this year, emphasizing the government's responsibility to ensure a peaceful election atmosphere. PDP's chief spokesperson, Suhail Bukhari, expressed skepticism, indicating that promises regarding elections and statehood have been made previously without fruition.

The Congress party criticized the Prime Minister's announcement as vague, with Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) senior vice president and chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma questioning the lack of specifics regarding timelines for statehood restoration and assembly polls. Sharma also raised concerns about security, unemployment, investment shortfalls, and incomplete projects.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi assured that preparations for holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are underway and that efforts to restore statehood are progressing. He commended the people for their record-breaking participation in recent Lok Sabha elections and stated that it is time for them to elect their local representatives. Modi's visit marks his first to the Valley after securing a third term as Prime Minister, during which he has pledged to focus on empowering youth and transforming Jammu and Kashmir.

The announcement comes against the backdrop of the Supreme Court's verdict last December, which directed the ECI to conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30 this year. This directive followed challenges to the Centre's decision on August 5, 2019, to abrogate Article 370. As political parties and citizens of Jammu and Kashmir react to these developments, the focus remains on how these promises will be implemented in the coming months.
