Over 32.5% of Indian University Students Are Engaged as Nascent Entrepreneurs, Report Finds

According to a recent report from IIT Mandi, over 32.5% of students in Indian universities are budding entrepreneurs, actively engaged in launching their businesses. The Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students Survey (GUESSS) India 2023 Report indicates that various policy initiatives in India are likely to encourage these entrepreneurial activities.

Indian College Students Embrace Entrepreneurship

The GUESSS project is a significant global research initiative, surveying student entrepreneurs across 57 countries. It aims to understand the entrepreneurial spirit, intentions, and activities of students worldwide. The report on India's entrepreneurial climate was led by Dr. Puran Singh, an Associate Professor at IIT Mandi's School of Management, with contributions from Dharmender K Yadav.

Entrepreneurial Intentions Among Indian Students

Indian students exhibit a strong entrepreneurial intent, scoring an average of 4.6 on a 7-point scale, surpassing the global average of 3.7. The report highlights that 38% of Indian students are involved in venture creation, with 33% at the nascent stage, making India a leader among global peers.

The survey reveals that 14% of Indian students plan to start their own businesses immediately after graduation, slightly below the global average of 15.7%. Additionally, 31.4% intend to pursue entrepreneurship five years post-graduation, compared to a global average of 30%.

Survey Insights and Future Prospects

The GUESSS India 2023 Survey was conducted between November 2023 and February 2024 and marked the first comprehensive study of Indian students' entrepreneurial spirit. It gathered responses from 13,896 students across numerous higher education institutions in India.

This survey provides a detailed understanding of the entrepreneurial ambitions among Indian students and serves as a strong foundation for evaluating the student entrepreneurship landscape in the country.

Dr. Puran Singh elaborated on the findings: "We are already the third largest start-up ecosystem in the world with the largest youth population and harnessing youths entrepreneurial potential would be pivotal to the country's growth." He emphasized India's strong entrepreneurial intent and the promising pipeline of emerging ventures.

The report underscores India's potential for growth through entrepreneurship, driven by its large youth population and supportive policy environment. As more students engage in entrepreneurial activities, this trend is expected to contribute significantly to India's economic development.
