'One Nation, One Election' Bill Gets Modi Cabinet Nod; Likely To be Tabled In Winter Session

In a significant move that could reshape the electoral landscape of India, the Modi Cabinet has given the green light to the 'One Nation, One Election' bill. This landmark decision paves the way for the proposal to be introduced during the current Winter Session. Advocates of this initiative, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have lauded it as a transformative step that promises to streamline governance and reduce election-related expenditures. Echoing this sentiment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently championed the idea, emphasizing its importance in modern times.

This push towards synchronized elections follows the acceptance of recommendations from a high-level committee by the Union Cabinet in September.

On September 2, 2023, the Central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, formed a High-Level Committee to assess the feasibility of holding simultaneous elections in India. Chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, the committee collected suggestions, viewpoints, and feedback from various stakeholders, including political parties. After thorough deliberations, the committee submitted its report on March 14, 2024. The government's goal is to conduct both Parliamentary and Assembly elections together.

The committee, led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, advocated for concurrent elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies, suggesting a phased implementation contingent on nationwide agreement.

The committee's findings, under Ram Nath Kovind's leadership, were formally presented to President Droupadi Murmu, marking a crucial step in the journey towards 'One Nation, One Election'. This proposal, hailed by the BJP as a historic move, aims to make governance more efficient and reduce the financial burden of conducting separate elections. Through the concerted efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet, the bill is now poised for discussion in Parliament, signaling a potential shift towards a more unified electoral process in India.
