Kolkata Medical Officer Arrested While Supporting Protesting Doctors at Durga Puja Carnival

An on-duty medical officer from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) was apprehended on Tuesday evening. The arrest occurred during the Durga Puja Carnival show, organised by the state government. Dr. Tapabrata Roy was detained for allegedly wearing a t-shirt and badge supporting doctors protesting the RG Kar hospital incident. He was part of the KMC medical team assigned to the event.

Kolkata Officer Arrested for Doctor Support

Dr. Roy claimed he was taken by police from Red Road without being informed of his destination. "I was not told by the police where they were taking me after I was called by them while I was performing my duty on the Red Road. They clicked several photos of me. I had shown them my official duty slip, posting me on the Red Road," he stated post-release.

Protests and Release

The news of Dr. Roy's arrest quickly spread, prompting many, including fellow medics, to gather at Maidan police station. They demanded his immediate release. Under increasing pressure, the police eventually released him. "I was released on a personal bond," said Dr. Roy, who wore a black t-shirt with the message "sirdara bikri nei," translating to "spine not for sale."

Dr. Roy also wore a badge reading "protiki anoshon" or "symbolic hunger strike." This act showed solidarity with junior doctors who have been fasting for 11 days demanding justice for a deceased colleague. The protest began after a medic's rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Preventive Measures and Ongoing Tensions

An officer from Kolkata Police described Dr. Roy's arrest as preventive but did not provide further details. Dr. Roy is stationed in KMC's ward 123, covering parts of Barisha in southwest Kolkata. His arrest has intensified tensions between doctors and police, adding to ongoing protests.

The state government hosted the carnival amidst these protests by junior doctors seeking justice for their colleague. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the aftermath of recent events.
