Odisha: Youth commits suicide in police station; custodial torture alleged

A tribal youth who was arrested in connection with a theft case, allegedly hanged himself to death in a police station in Odisha's Sambalpur district on Thursday night. Meanwhile, high alert has been sounded in Sambalpur city in the wake of the riot-like situation.

The youth has been identified as Abinash Munda of Bhalupali village who was detained a day earlier for suspected involvement in a theft case. He was found hanging with a bed sheet inside the lockup of Ainthapalli police station.

According to victim's family, the cops' might have tortured him which led to his suicide. His father alleged that though the police had promised him to send his son back home after interrogation, they did not.

Police had picked up Munda and found some of the missing jewellery from his house.
