Odisha Chief Minister Initiates Inquiry into Deaths Linked to Mango Kernel Consumption

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has initiated an investigation into the deaths of two women in Kandhamal district. These women allegedly died after consuming mango kernel gruel. Six others were hospitalised following the incident in Mandipanka village, Daringbadi block, last week.

Inquiry Ordered into Mango Kernel Deaths in Odisha

The Congress party visited the affected village and demanded Rs 20 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased. They also called for the removal of the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister and action against the Kandhamal district collector.

Investigation and Government Response

The Chief Minister's Office announced that a revenue divisional commissioner-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Of the six women who fell ill, some were transferred to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack as their condition worsened, according to officials.

The state government refuted claims that mango kernel gruel caused the deaths. They stated that food poisoning was responsible, not the consumption of mango kernels. "Consuming mango kernel is the food habit of the people there and the death is due to contaminated food," they said.

Congress Party's Allegations

The opposition Congress alleged severe food scarcity in Mandipanka village. They sought intervention from Governor Raghubar Das regarding this issue. A Congress delegation submitted a memorandum to the Governor, criticising the government's alleged negligence towards villagers' hardships.

The Governor assured them he would discuss the matter with relevant authorities to find a solution. "Honble Governor assured them that he will discuss the matter with @SecyChief and find out the solution for the issue," stated an X post from his office.

Food Supplies Minister's Statement

Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister KC Patra dismissed claims of food scarcity. He stated that villagers had enough food grains at home and did not collect their October quota. He reiterated that food poisoning was behind the deaths.

The Congress party continues to demand accountability from government officials and compensation for affected families. The investigation ordered by Chief Minister Majhi aims to uncover further details about this tragic incident.
