State Government Intervenes as Teacher's Strike Affects Education in Odisha's Elementary Schools
The ongoing strike by 1.30 lakh primary teachers across Odisha has led the state government to issue directives for the educators to resume duty immediately. The strike, which began on September 8th, is affecting education in around 56,000 elementary schools across the state.
The state of Odisha is grappling with a significant disruption in its education system as 1.30 lakh primary teachers have been on strike since September 8, affecting around 56,000 elementary schools across the state. The teachers' demands include the abolition of the contractual appointment system, an increase in grade pay and reinstatement of the old pension scheme.
Government's Response to Teachers' Strike

In response to this situation, on Thursday, the state government issued a directive for these striking teachers to resume their duties. This decision was communicated via a letter addressed to all district and block education officers by the director of elementary education. The letter highlighted that most protesting teachers were staging dharna (a non-violent sit-in protest) outside Block Education Officer (BEO) offices without obtaining necessary permissions from competent authorities – an act deemed as 'gross misconduct'.
The Importance of Maintaining Academic Calendar
The letter further emphasized on maintaining academic continuity despite protests. It stated that there must be at least 220 working days in an academic year and if this requirement is not met during regular working months due to strikes or any other disruptions, it should be compensated later.
A Sub-Committee Formed To Address Issues
To address these issues raised by the agitating educators, a sub-committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the director of elementary education. This committee's role will be to examine and discuss these demands extensively with office bearers from teacher’s association present during discussions.
A Path Towards Resolution
Following thorough discussions with representatives from teacher’s association about their concerns and demands, this committee will then put forward its recommendations to an inter-ministerial committee responsible for making final decisions regarding these matters. This process signifies a potential path towards resolution between the state government and the striking teachers, with an aim to restore normalcy in Odisha's education system.
In conclusion, while the strike by primary teachers has posed a significant challenge to Odisha's educational framework, the state government is making efforts to address their concerns. The formation of a dedicated sub-committee represents an important step towards understanding and resolving these issues. However, it remains crucial for both parties – the government and teachers – to work collaboratively towards ensuring that students' learning is not compromised amidst this crisis. This situation calls for a balanced approach where teacher’s demands are heard and addressed without disrupting academic continuity.
