Odisha Governor Calls for Inclusive Voting to Build a Stronger Democracy

On the occasion of the 14th National Voters' Day (NVD), Odisha Governor Raghubar Das emphasized the importance of inclusive voting, urging all citizens, including persons with disabilities, the elderly, and women, to actively participate in the electoral process.

Youth as Representatives of a New India

Addressing a function marking the observance of NVD in Bhubaneswar, Governor Das highlighted the role of young voters as representatives of the new generation. He expressed his belief that these young voters will shape the future of India and propel the country to greater heights in the coming 25 years.

Increasing Voter Registration and Participation

Governor Das stressed the significance of registering all eligible individuals aged 18 and above in the voters' list. He noted that while around 17 crore people cast their votes in the first general elections in 1951-52, resulting in a 45% voter turnout, the voting percentage has since increased to 68% in the 2019 elections, with over 90 crore people casting their votes. He encouraged further growth in voter participation.

Distribution of Voter Identity Cards

During the function, Governor Das handed over voter identity cards to 20 new voters, including 3 individuals from the Persons with Disability (PWD) category, 10 from the Transgender (TG) community, and 5 from the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG).

Odisha's Chief Electoral Officer on New Voter Registration

Odisha's Chief Electoral Officer, NB Dhal, shared that the state has a 2.28% ratio of new voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years, which translates to approximately 7 lakh individuals. He emphasized the importance of encouraging all eligible voters, including new voters, to exercise their franchise.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's Message on National Voters' Day

In a post on social media, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his views on the significance of voting. He stated, "Voting empowers citizens to give direction to governance and strengthen democracy. On #NationalVotersDay, I urge all eligible voters to actively take part in the electoral process and cast their votes judiciously to shape the future of our state and country."
