Gopinath Swain: A Legendary Krishna Leela Singer

Gopinath Swain, a remarkable 105-year-old Krishna Leela singer from Ganjam district, has dedicated his life to safeguarding and popularizing this ancient tradition. Born into a family of Krishna Leela performers, Swain embarked on his musical journey at the tender age of five. His unwavering commitment to traditional techniques and improvisational methods has breathed new life into Krishna Leela, forging a bridge between the past and present.

Swain's repertoire includes five ancient ragas: Dakhinasri, Chinta Desakhya, Todi Bhatiari, Bhatiari, and Kumbha Kamodi. He has also established Akhadas, traditional village schools, where he imparts his knowledge to hundreds of eager disciples. Despite his advanced age, Swain continues to teach and propagate this unique art, actively seeking out talented individuals from across southern Odisha.

Bhagabat Padhan: Preserving the Sacred Dance of Mahadev

Bhagabat Padhan, an 85-year-old exponent of the Sabda Nrutya folk dance from Bargarh district, has dedicated over five decades of his life to preserving and popularizing this sacred dance form, which is considered the dance of Mahadev (Lord Shiva). Through his tireless efforts, Padhan has successfully taken Sabda Nrutya beyond the confines of temples, allowing it to reach a wider audience.

Padhan's unwavering devotion to his art has led him to train more than 600 dancers, ensuring the continuity of this traditional dance form. Despite facing financial challenges during his early years as a primary school teacher in the 1960s, Padhan never wavered in his commitment to Sabda Nrutya.
