Northern Railway Seeks Officer Appointment in 10 Days for Kashmir Valley Expansion

The Northern Railway has initiated a significant step towards enhancing connectivity in the Kashmir Valley by issuing a directive to all Principal Heads of Departments (PHODs). This directive, outlined in a letter dated May 29, 2024, mandates the appointment of junior administrative grade (JAG) officers in the Kashmir Valley within ten days. This move is aimed at ensuring a seamless transition of operational and maintenance responsibilities from a construction firm that has recently completed a crucial railway section.

Railway Expands Kashmir Connection

The completion of the Sangaldan-Srinagar-Baramulla section marks a pivotal moment, as it is already operational. The forthcoming commissioning of the section extending from Sangaldan to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) is anticipated to forge a direct railway link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India. The General Manager of Northern Railways emphasized the importance of posting competent officers in Srinagar/Budgam to oversee the operation and maintenance of this section, highlighting the necessity for a smooth handover from the Construction Organisation.

Railway sources indicate that preparations are underway to commence train services on the Sangaldan-SVDK section by December 2024. However, challenges persist, particularly in the T1 tunnel between Katra and Reasi Stations. The Northern Railway, which completed this tunnel on December 20, 2023, had previously identified it as one of the most challenging projects due to its passage through the Himalayan Main Boundary Thrust, characterized by rugged terrain and significant water inflow.

In a landmark development earlier in February 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 48.1 km-long Banihal-Khari-Sumber-Sangaldan section. This inauguration also marked the commencement of train operations from Baramulla to Sangaldan via Banihal and introduced the first electric trains in the Kashmir valley. The event was notable for featuring the country's longest transportation tunnel, the 12.77 km-long T-50 tunnel, located on the Khari-Sumber section.

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project has been instrumental in enhancing rail connectivity in the region. The first section of this project, connecting Baramulla to Qazigund, became operational in 2009 under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government. This connectivity was further extended from Qazigund to Banihal in July 2013 with the operationalisation of the Qazigund-Banihal section, which includes the 11.2-km-long T-80 Pir Panjal tunnel.

With the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) station already serving as a hub connecting various parts of India, the opening of the Sangaldan-SVDK section is set to integrate the Kashmir Valley into this network. A railway official expressed optimism about achieving seamless rail connectivity from the northern reaches of Kashmir valley to Kanyakumari at India's southern tip.

This development not only signifies a monumental achievement in bridging geographical divides but also underscores India's commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity across its diverse landscapes. As these projects near completion and operationalisation, they promise to facilitate easier travel and commerce, knitting together distant parts of the country more closely than ever before.
