Government Reports No Conclusive Evidence Linking Air Pollution Directly to Health Issues

Air pollution is a significant factor contributing to respiratory issues, yet there is no definitive data in India linking it directly to specific diseases, according to MoS for Health Prataprao Jadhav. In a statement to the Lok Sabha, Jadhav explained that the health impacts of air pollution are influenced by various factors such as diet, occupation, socioeconomic status, medical history, immunity, and genetics.

No Direct Link Between Air Pollution and Health

The Indian government has initiated several measures to tackle air pollution nationwide. These efforts include the National Programme for Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH), which aims to raise awareness and build capacity regarding climate-sensitive health issues. Since 2019, this programme has focused on preparedness and response activities within the health sector.

Government Initiatives and Support

The Union Health Ministry offers technical and financial assistance to states and union territories to enhance public healthcare systems. This support is based on proposals submitted under the National Health Mission's Programme Implementation Plans (PIPs). Additionally, funding is provided for the National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health to increase awareness among stakeholders about climate change's health impacts.

The NPCCHH has developed a Health Adaptation Plan addressing diseases linked to air pollution. It also created a State Action Plan on Climate Change and Human Health for all states and union territories. This plan includes a chapter dedicated to air pollution interventions aimed at reducing its impact.

Training and Awareness Campaigns

To combat air pollution-related illnesses, training modules have been created for programme managers, medical officers, nurses, and frontline workers like ASHA. These modules also target vulnerable groups such as women and children. The NPCCHH has produced customised IEC materials in English, Hindi, and regional languages for various vulnerable groups.

National-level capacity-building workshops are held annually to train master trainers who can further educate state-level trainers on air pollution-related illnesses. Early warning systems for air pollution are disseminated by the Indian Meteorological Department to prepare health sectors and communities.

Public Health Advisories and Campaigns

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issues advisories on reducing air pollution's impact. Public awareness campaigns are organised annually with states for events like World Environment Day in June, International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies in September, and National Pollution Control Day.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) aims to protect women's and children's health by providing clean cooking fuel (LPG). The Swachh Bharat Mission focuses on cleaning streets, roads, and infrastructure across India's urban and rural areas. Swachh Hawa is an essential part of this mission.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change launched the National Clean Air Programme in 2019. This national strategy seeks to reduce air pollution levels throughout India.
