Breakthrough in 2023 London Attack: NIA Arrests Key Suspect

In a significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) announced the arrest of Inderpal Singh Gaba, a UK resident from Hounslow, marking the first arrest connected to the assault on the Indian High Commission in London in March 2023. This arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into protests that escalated into unlawful activities on March 22, 2023. The federal agency's statement did not disclose the location of Gaba's arrest but highlighted the broader conspiracy aimed at targeting Indian missions and officials abroad.

NIA Arrests London Attack Suspect

The NIA's probe has uncovered that the events of March 19 and March 22 last year were not isolated incidents but were linked to a larger scheme intended to harm Indian diplomatic interests. The investigation points to pro-Khalistani protesters' attempts to deface the Indian High Commission in London, including an incident where the national flag was forcibly removed amid demonstrations outside the commission's premises on March 19.

These aggressive acts were reportedly in response to actions taken by Punjab Police against Amritpal Singh, a pro-Khalistani separatist, on March 18, 2023. Singh, who has drawn comparisons to the late Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was apprehended on April 23 following an extensive search operation. He is presently detained in Dibrugarh jail, Assam, with nine associates, all members of the Waris Punjab De outfit.

The NIA's involvement in this case began in April last year after taking over from the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. The initial case was registered under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act due to the international nature of the crimes and involved individuals holding Indian nationality. In June, the NIA released five videos appealing to the public for assistance in identifying those involved in these violent protests.

This case gained further international dimension as NIA officials traveled to London for case details and engaged with Scotland Yard representatives. The incident at the Indian High Commission saw protesters brandishing Khalistani flags and chanting slogans while attempting to seize the tricolour flag. This arrest marks a pivotal moment in India's efforts to address threats against its overseas missions and safeguard its diplomatic personnel.
