News Agency Takes Legal Action Against Netflix Over IC-814: Here Are The Reasons
Indian news agency ANI has taken legal action against Netflix Inc. and the producers of the series "IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack," demanding the removal of four episodes for allegedly using ANI's copyrighted content without permission.
The lawsuit, filed in the Delhi High Court, claims that Netflix used ANI's archival footage and trademark without a proper license, ANI's lawyer Sidhant Kumar, reported by Reuters on Monday.

ANI V/s Netflix
The series, a fictionalized retelling of the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 from Kathmandu to Kandahar, has faced significant controversy since its release last month. Criticism has come not only from social media users but also from members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as reported by Hindustan Times.
The series was accused of inaccurately portraying the hijackers with Hindu names, despite the fact that they were Muslims. Netflix, under pressure, added new disclaimers to the six-part series after being summoned by India's Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The streaming platform clarified that the code names used in the show were based on actual events.
Legal Action and Criticism
Kumar stated that ANI's content, including copyrighted footage, was used without any agreement or authorization. He further emphasized that due to the widespread criticism of the series, ANI's brand name and trademark were being tarnished. ANI has requested the removal of the four episodes where its content was used without proper permission.
The Delhi High Court has agreed to hear the case and has requested a response from Netflix. At the time of reporting, Netflix had not provided a comment on the matter, as per media reports.
Background of the Kandahar Hijacking
The December 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 was a major crisis, ending with the Indian government agreeing to release three Islamist militants, including Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Masood Azhar, in exchange for the hostages. India has consistently blamed Pakistan and militant groups based in Pakistan for orchestrating the hijacking, as reported by Hindustan Times.
This lawsuit adds to the ongoing controversies surrounding "IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack," reviving the political and diplomatic tensions linked to the historical hijacking incident.
