New Unified Pension Scheme (UPS): Am I Eligible? Check Details Inside
In a significant move, the Union Cabinet on Saturday approved the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), a new initiative set to benefit approximately 23 lakh government employees.
This scheme, which serves as an alternative to the existing National Pension System (NPS), was announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a media briefing.

Unified Pension Scheme
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who chaired the Cabinet meeting, emphasized the scheme's importance, stating on X, "The Unified Pension Scheme ensures dignity and financial security for government employees, aligning with our commitment to their well-being and a secure future."
The UPS has been designed to provide assured pension benefits. Employees can opt to shift from the NPS to the UPS, which offers an assured pension, a minimum pension, and an assured family pension, effective from the next financial year.
Background
In 2023, the Finance Ministry established a committee led by Finance Secretary TV Somanathan to review the NPS, which has been in place for government employees who joined service after April 1, 2004. The committee's recommendations have paved the way for the introduction of the UPS.
Key Features of the Unified Pension Scheme
The UPS guarantees an assured pension, calculated as 50% of the average basic pay drawn over the last 12 months before retirement, provided the employee has a minimum qualifying service of 25 years. For those with shorter service periods, a proportionate plan is available, with a minimum service requirement of 10 years.
In addition to the assured pension, the UPS provides an assured family pension, which amounts to 60% of the employee's pension in the event of their death. The scheme also ensures a minimum pension of ₹10,000 per month for those retiring after at least 10 years of service.
Eligibility and Implementation
The scheme is set to be implemented from April 1, 2025. Employees retiring up to March 31, 2025, will be eligible, with arrears also applicable. The Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the scheme would positively impact 23 lakh government employees.
Following the Cabinet's approval, Prime Minister Modi met with representatives from the Joint Consultative Machinery for Central Government employees, who expressed their satisfaction with the decision. Modi shared on X, "Met a delegation of staff side from the Joint Consultative Machinery for Central Government employees. They expressed joy on the Cabinet's decision regarding the Unified Pension Scheme."
While the decision has been welcomed by several BJP-ruled states, some non-BJP ruled states have opted to revert to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) instead. Nonetheless, the UPS is expected to provide a secure and dignified retirement for millions of government employees across the country.
