Rajya Sabha's Representation in Modi's Latest Cabinet Reshuffle
In a significant reshuffle and expansion of the Indian government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's latest Council of Ministers sees a notable representation from the Rajya Sabha. With the swearing-in ceremony that took place on Sunday evening at Rashtrapati Bhawan, it was observed that one out of every five members in Modi's revamped team is from the Upper House of Parliament. This strategic composition underscores the diverse representation in the government, aiming to blend experience with fresh perspectives.

The newly formed Council of Ministers, dubbed Modi 3.0, comprises 72 members, including the Prime Minister himself. Among these, 13 hail from the Rajya Sabha, while a significant majority of 57 are freshly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Lok Sabha. This mix highlights the government's effort to balance parliamentary experience with new legislative energy.
Interestingly, two of the new ministers of state, Ravneet Singh Bittu and George Kurian, currently do not hold membership in either house of Parliament. They are mandated to secure a position within six months following their oath-taking ceremony. This requirement underscores the constitutional necessity for ministers to be part of the legislative body.
The composition of Modi's cabinet is particularly noteworthy for its inclusion of Rajya Sabha members in key positions. Among the 31 cabinet ministers, including PM Modi, eight are from the Rajya Sabha. Prominent figures such as Jagat Prakash Nadda, Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar, Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Hardeep Singh Puri are part of this list. Additionally, Sarbananda Sonowal and Jyotiraditya Scindia, despite being Rajya Sabha members, have been elected to the Lok Sabha in this election cycle.
The Council also includes seven Rajya Sabha members who have been appointed as Ministers of State. This list features names like Ramdas Athawale, Ramnath Thakur, B L Verma, L Murugan, Satish Chandra Dubey, Sanjay Seth, and Pabitra Margherita. Their induction is a testament to the inclusive approach adopted by Prime Minister Modi in forming his team, ensuring a representation that spans across both houses of Parliament.
This strategic blend of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members in the Council of Ministers reflects a deliberate approach by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure a comprehensive representation from across the political spectrum and different regions of India. With this latest reshuffle, Modi 3.0 aims to address national challenges with a balanced mix of experience and fresh energy.
