Jaishankar Stresses Urgent Need to Reform Multilateral Institutions

India has emphasised the urgent need for reforming multilateral institutions, highlighting that the United Nations' stagnation in this area is detrimental. This issue was a focal point at the third edition of the Voice of Global South Summit, hosted by India and attended by over 120 countries. Many participants advocated for changes in multilateral organisations.

Call for Multilateralism Reform

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated, "There is a crying need to reform multilateralism if we are to revive its credibility. No nation really differs with this assessment." He added that the inability to advance reforms at the United Nations is increasingly costly.

Reforming Multilateral Institutions

India has consistently pushed for reforms in global institutions like the United Nations, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund. These institutions must reflect current global realities, according to Jaishankar. He noted that despite facing significant challenges, solutions have not emerged from multilateral platforms due to their outdated structures and polarisation.

Jaishankar also addressed the need for reformed multilateralism through the G20, particularly focusing on Multilateral Development Banks. "As a group, we need to press home our case," he said.

Economic Resilience and Climate Change

In his opening remarks, Jaishankar discussed four key areas: economic resilience, climate change and energy transitions, revitalising multilateralism, and democratising digital transformations. He highlighted how the COVID-19 pandemic, conflicts, and climate events have underscored the necessity for reliable supply chains and diversified production to mitigate risks in the global economy.

On climate change, Jaishankar identified three major issues: risks, transition costs, and resource accessibility. During India's G20 Presidency, efforts were made to promote just energy transitions. "We must work together as a family towards facilitating the flow of low-cost financing and critical technologies to the Global South," he stated.

Digital Public Infrastructure

Jaishankar highlighted the transformative impact of digital public infrastructure in India. "The digital public infrastructure has been a key driver of the transformation currently underway in our country. Some of our experiences will be of interest to Global South partners," he said. He encouraged intra-South digital exchanges and cooperation.

He also discussed how various conflicts and geopolitical tensions affect the Global South disproportionately. "This gathering takes place as the world grapples with multiple conflicts, tensions and stresses. We, the nations of the Global South, are particularly impacted," he noted.

Access to Finance and Technology

Jaishankar stressed that access to finance and technology is crucial for unlocking development potential in the Global South. "We must encourage a more proactive and willing culture in that regard," he said. India is sharing its Digital Public Infrastructure solutions and undertaking development projects in nearly 80 countries, many as grants.

The summit aimed to define collective interests under the theme "Charting a Unique Paradigm for the Global South." This exchange of views sought to address shared challenges and opportunities among participating nations.

The call for reforming multilateral institutions remains a critical issue as nations strive for a more equitable global order. The discussions at the summit highlighted India's commitment to leading these efforts on behalf of developing countries.
