Navi Mumbais Palm Beach Road to Transform with New Cycle Track

In response to the tragic death of former Intel India country head Avtar Saini, who was hit by a cab while cycling on Navi Mumbai's Palm Beach Road, civic authorities have announced the construction of a cycle track along the thoroughfare. The 7.5-km cycle track is expected to be completed by April 11, with 5.24 km ready for cyclists.

Progress of the Cycle Track Project

Executive Engineer Girsh Gumasthe of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation provided an update on the project's progress. He stated that the civil work on the 5.24-km stretch is nearly complete, and ancillary works will commence shortly. The cycle track will have a width of 3 meters.

Initial Plan and Adjustments

The initial plan for the cycle track was to cover a distance of 9.26 km. However, due to certain hurdles, the route was shortened to 7.5 km. The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 11 crore.

Tragic Incident Prompts Action

Avtar Saini, aged 68, was struck by a speeding cab on the morning of February 28 while cycling with fellow cyclists on Palm Beach Road in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead. This incident sparked outrage among cycling enthusiasts, who highlighted the need for dedicated cycle tracks in Maharashtra's towns and cities.

Inspection by Thane MP

Thane MP Rajan Vichare conducted an inspection of the ongoing work on the cycle track on Friday. This demonstrates the importance placed on the project by local authorities.

The construction of the cycle track on Palm Beach Road is a positive step towards improving safety for cyclists in Navi Mumbai. It is hoped that this initiative will encourage more people to take up cycling, promoting a healthier and more sustainable mode of transportation.
