At a recent meet in Delhi, experts advocated for a national dementia registry and the integration of AI innovations to improve dementia care in India. They emphasised the need for a comprehensive strategy involving all stakeholders.

The experts proposed establishing a National Dementia Registry and promoting innovation in AI and technology for dementia care. They stressed the importance of a multi-sectoral strategy that unites health, social care, community, and government systems. Dr. Vinod K Paul from NITI Aayog highlighted dementia as a public health and social challenge requiring intersectoral coordination.

Focus on Public Health Priority

Dr. Bharat Lal of the National Human Rights Commission emphasised recognising dementia as a public health priority to protect the rights and dignity of those affected. Amit Yadav from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment reiterated the government's commitment to enhancing social care services for people with dementia and the elderly.

Yadav stated, "By investing in caregiver training, capacity-building programmes, and intergenerational support, we can ensure dignity, safety, and inclusion for our elderly population." This highlights the government's focus on strengthening support systems for caregivers and families.

Integrating Existing Programmes

Dr. Sunita Sharma from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stressed aligning dementia policy with existing government programmes like the National Programme for Healthcare of the Elderly (NPHCE) and the National Health Mission (NHM). Over 100 participants attended the consultative meet, discussing early diagnosis, stigma reduction, caregiver support, workforce training, and financial protection.

The meeting concluded with a consensus on a multi-sectoral strategy involving health, social welfare, education, and financial systems. Priorities include awareness, early detection, stigma reduction, training across healthcare levels, community-based services for families and caregivers, financial protection, and integration into existing welfare schemes.

Compiling Recommendations

Dementia India Alliance and IHBAS will compile key recommendations into a report to guide India's National Dementia Strategy formulation. This report will be submitted to NITI Aayog and relevant ministries. Dr. Rajinder K Dhamija of IHBAS stated that aligning research, clinical practice, and policy ensures practical strategies responsive to individuals' needs.

Dr. Radha S Murthy of Dementia India Alliance said, "By bringing together experts, policymakers, caregivers and civil society, we aim to build an inclusive framework that addresses prevention, care and support for people living with dementia across the country." This collaboration aims to create an effective framework addressing various aspects of dementia care nationwide.
