National Conference and BJP Express Confidence in LAHDC-Kargil Elections
"The National Conference and the BJP express confidence of a good performance in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council-Kargil LAHDC elections, a day before the announcement of its results."
In the serene and high-altitude region of Kargil Ladakh, political tensions were simmering as the National Conference (NC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressed confidence in their performance for the upcoming Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council-Kargil (LAHDC) elections. This announcement came on Saturday, just a day before the declaration of results. The election had taken place earlier that week for 26 out of 30 seats in the hill council, with four councillors possessing voting rights being nominated by the administration.
First Poll Post Abrogation of Article 370

This election holds special significance as it was the first one to be conducted in Kargil after two major political changes - abrogation of Article 370 and creation of Union Territory of Ladakh in August 2019. Both these events have significantly altered the socio-political landscape in this region.
The Pre-Poll Alliance: NC and Congress
The NC and Congress announced a pre-poll alliance but fielded separate candidates –17 from NC and 22 from Congress respectively. However, this arrangement was restricted only to areas where there was a tough contest with BJP. The strategic move indicates an attempt to consolidate votes against BJP by avoiding division among opposition voters.
BJP’s Stance & AAP's Entry
The BJP which had won only one seat in previous elections managed to extend its tally to three after two PDP councillors joined them later. In this election, they fielded total seventeen candidates showcasing their growing ambition for establishing a stronger foothold in this strategically important territory. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), known for its stronghold over Delhi politics also tried its luck from four seats while twenty-five independent candidates were also contesting adding more dynamism to electoral competition.
Confidence in Victory
The NC, which led the previous council, expressed optimism about its performance. They stated that they are hopeful and sure that their voters came out to support them. This confidence reflects how crucial these elections are for the parties involved and their belief in their political strategies.
In conclusion, the LAHDC-Kargil elections have become a battleground for major political parties like NC, BJP and Congress along with new entrants like AAP. The election results will not only determine who controls this key hill council but also set a precedent for future politics in Ladakh post abrogation of Article 370. As all eyes turn towards Kargil Ladakh awaiting the announcement of results, it is clear that these elections hold significance far beyond just local governance - they symbolize the evolving political dynamics in this newly formed Union Territory.
