The National Birth Defect Awareness Month 2024 was launched in New Delhi, aiming to raise awareness about preventing, identifying, and managing birth defects to reduce child mortality.

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) has the potential to revolutionize child healthcare in India, complementing the existing Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), according to Dr. V.K. Paul, Member (Health) of NITI Aayog. Dr. Paul emphasized the importance of addressing birth defects to reduce child mortality rates, highlighting that birth defects contribute significantly to child deaths, although they may not be as prevalent as malaria, pneumonia, and other diseases.

The National Birth Defect Awareness Month 2024 was launched in New Delhi on Friday, with the theme "Breaking Barriers: Inclusive Support for Children with Birth Defects." The campaign aims to raise awareness about preventing, early identifying, and managing birth defects effectively. Dr. Paul stressed the need for increased intensity and coverage to effectively address the issue of birth defects.

Pediatrics as a Career Choice

Dr. Paul encouraged medical students to consider specializing in pediatrics to strengthen child healthcare. He acknowledged the emotional toll that birth defects can take on families and emphasized the importance of addressing these concerns through the campaign.

Folic Acid Supplementation: A Key Intervention

Dr. Paul highlighted the effectiveness of folic acid supplementation, particularly in preventing neural tube defects (NTDs). He called for increased efforts to promote folic acid intake among women of childbearing age.

Pre-Pregnancy Care: A Foundation for Healthy Childbirth

Dr. Paul emphasized the significance of pre-pregnancy care for women, including monitoring nutritional status, body mass index (BMI), thyroid function, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). He stressed that these factors play a crucial role in ensuring healthy childbirth.

Early Identification and Registry of Birth Defects

Apurva Chandra, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, underscored the importance of early identification of birth defects, such as clubfoot, hearing impairments, retinal defects, and cleft lips, as these conditions can significantly impact a child's future. He expressed enthusiasm for the month-long campaign and highlighted the potential of maintaining a registry of child birth defects through the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) to facilitate effective tracking and treatment.

The National Birth Defect Awareness Month 2024 represents a significant step towards addressing the issue of birth defects in India. By raising awareness, promoting early identification, and encouraging folic acid supplementation, the campaign aims to improve child health outcomes and ensure a brighter future for children born with birth defects.
