Four Dead in Nagpur Floods Including Paralysed Woman, Compensation Announced by Deputy CM
In the aftermath of heavy rains causing severe flooding in Nagpur, four individuals have lost their lives. The victims include a bedridden paralysed woman who was unable to be rescued from her home. In response to these tragic events, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister has promised Rs 4 lakh each as compensation for the families of the deceased.
On the 23rd of September, heavy rains leading to severe flooding resulted in the unfortunate death of four individuals in Nagpur. Among those who lost their lives was a 53-year-old paralysed woman who was unable to escape due to her bedridden condition. The Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, announced later that evening that each family of the deceased would receive Rs 4 lakh as compensation.

Floods Claim Lives
The first reported case involved Sandhya Dhore and her mother Sayabai Dhore, aged 72, whose house in Surendragadh was infiltrated by flood waters. Due to Sandhya's paralysis, she could not be evacuated from her bed and unfortunately drowned as water levels rose within the room. Her mother Sayabai however managed to be rescued by relatives. A rescue team discovered Sandhya’s lifeless body the following morning.
In another incident at Gittikhadan, Meerabai Kappuswamy aged 70 died after water entered her home around 2 am. Living alone without any immediate assistance available during this catastrophic event led to her untimely demise. Relatives found Meerabai's body early morning at around 6 am.
Unidentified Body Found
An unidentified body was also discovered on Saturday evening near Panchsheel Square under Dhantoli police station limits inside a nullah (major drain). The identity of this individual along with cause and time of death are yet unknown and remain under investigation by local authorities.
Vendor Drowns in Flooded Pit
The fourth victim of these floods was Sanjay Shankar Gadegaokar (52), a tea vendor residing in Ayodhya Nagar. He tragically drowned in a flooded pit located on the premises of Government Medical College and Hospital. The circumstances leading to his presence in such a location during the floods are yet unclear.
In conclusion, the heavy rains and subsequent flooding in Nagpur have led to a tragic loss of life. The situation brings to light the need for better preparedness and response mechanisms during natural disasters especially for vulnerable populations such as bedridden individuals or those living alone. As climate change intensifies weather events around the world, it is crucial that cities like Nagpur invest in infrastructure and systems that can minimize damage and save lives during such incidents.
