Nagpur Blast: PM Modi Announces Ex-Gratia After Nagpur Factory Blast Claims 17 Lives

A routine Sunday morning turned into a scene of devastation in Maharashtra's Nagpur district when a massive explosion ripped through an explosives manufacturing unit, killing at least 17 people and injuring 18 others.

The blast occurred at the Raulgaon facility of SBL Energy Limited, located in Katol tehsil. According to company representatives, the explosion struck the detonator packing section between 7 am and 7.15 am, catching workers at the start of their shift. The force of the blast tore through the unit, leaving destruction in its wake.

Police officials confirmed the death toll at 17, with 18 others sustaining injuries. Several of the injured were rushed to hospitals in Nagpur, where they are undergoing treatment. Authorities fear the toll could rise depending on the condition of the critically hurt.

Emergency teams responded swiftly. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force were deployed to assist with rescue efforts and secure the site. Local administration officials, including the district collector and senior police officers, reached the factory to supervise operations and coordinate medical assistance.

The tragedy drew immediate reactions from the highest levels of government. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the explosion as deeply distressing and offered condolences to the bereaved families. He announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the incident "extremely tragic and unfortunate" and ordered a comprehensive investigation. He said a detailed probe would examine the cause of the explosion and determine whether safety lapses contributed to the disaster.

Company officials stated that rescue operations were ongoing and assured cooperation with investigating authorities. A formal statement is expected after preliminary findings are reviewed.

The Nagpur explosion comes just a day after a deadly blast at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, which claimed 21 lives. The back-to-back incidents have intensified scrutiny over safety standards in industries dealing with explosive materials, and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations.
