Cable Cut at Borivali Station Disrupts Mumbai's Local Train Traffic

On Monday, Mumbai commuters experienced significant disruptions in their daily travel as the Western Railway network's local train services encountered severe technical difficulties. The issue, stemming from cable cuts at Borivali station—a key transit point in north Mumbai with a high volume of daily commuters—resulted in numerous cancellations and delays across suburban services. The problem, which began around 2 am, took the Western Railway officials approximately 11 hours to fix.

Train Disruption in Mumbai Due to Cable Cut

A senior official from Western Railway attributed the mishap to monsoon preparatory works, explaining that the cable was accidentally cut during excavation for a drain at Borivali on Sunday night. Chief Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Western Railway, Sumit Thakur, communicated via social media that the incident affected local train services departing from platforms no. 1 and 2 at Borivali station, while services from other platforms continued without interruption. Thakur highlighted the efforts of the technical team and railway workers in restoring service at platform no. 1 by 12:05 pm and platform no. 2 by 1:30 pm on Monday.

Despite the restoration efforts, some passengers reported delays ranging from 15 to 20 minutes on the Western Railway suburban services throughout the day. To alleviate the inconvenience faced by commuters, Maha Metro ran 16 extra services using four additional trainsets on Lines 2A and 7, linking Andheri and Dahisar. This decision was made following directives from MMRDA metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee. The official noted that ridership on these routes surged to 2.14 lakh by 8 pm on Monday, compared to the usual daily figures of around 1.85 lakh passengers.

Metro stations such as Borivali, Kurar, and Rashtriya Udyan saw increased crowding due to the disruption on Western Railway (WR). Frustrated passengers voiced their concerns and shared videos of the chaotic scenes at the railway station on X, formerly known as Twitter. The Western Railway operates over 1,300 suburban services daily, catering to approximately 30 lakh passengers across a network stretching from Churchgate to Dahanu. The additional services run by both the Western Railway and Maha Metro aimed to minimize the disruption's impact on the daily commute of thousands.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by Mumbai's public transportation system in maintaining seamless service amidst unforeseen technical difficulties and highlights the importance of swift response measures to ensure minimal inconvenience to commuters.
