MP woman punished to beg for a week over the death of calf by village panchayat

A caste panchayat has ordered a woman to beg after she accidently killed a calf in Bhind town, Madhya Pradesh.

Bhopal, Sep 2: We are living in times when lives of cows are more important than humans. There is nothing wrong in fighting for animal rights, but it speaks volumes about a "flawed" society if people are being killed by mob in the name of cow protection, which is happening on a frequent basis across the country.

Now, another story from Bhind town of Madhya Pradesh has come to light after a woman has accidently killed a calf. After the death of the calf, a caste panchayat has ordered the woman to beg for a week in nearby villages to collect money for Ganga snaan (a dip in the Ganga river), a ritual followed by Hindus to atone themselves from any sins.

The incident took place on Friday and once the village headmen, belonging to the Nai community, got to know about the "murder" they immediately came to the decision to punish the woman Kamlesh Shriwas, who is in her 50s.

Kamlesh, however, maintains that she did not kill the calf and it was an accident and not intentional.

She added that the calf died when she was trying to separate the animal from its mother when a rope got entangled in its neck.

Speaking to The Indian Express, municipal councilor Mukesh Garg, in whose ward no 10 the woman and her family resides, said that he opposed the punishment but no one listened to him.

He added the cow belonged to the woman and the death was accidental, not intentional. It seems that the woman is going to follow the order of the caste panchayat as she did not return to her house since Friday.
