Mohan Majhi’s 5-Star Stay Row: A Misplaced Criticism Or An Elitist Bias?
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi's recent visit to Delhi and Mumbai for high-level Investors Meet has sparked an unnecessary controversy over his stay in five-star hotels and presidential suites. Critics, especially from the opposition, have tried to spin the narrative around extravagance. However, the truth paints a different picture - one rooted in necessity, protocol and representation.
First, it is important to understand the nature of such official visits. When a Chief Minister engages with the country's most influential business leaders - be it industrial giants or Companies' CEOs- the meeting space and atmosphere must match the level of diplomacy and stature expected in such exchanges.

According to state government sources, the presidential suites or high-end rooms weren't used for personal leisure. They served a functional purpose-offering secured, private venues for meetings with investors and policy stakeholders. Misinterpreting this logistical necessity as personal luxury is misleading and intellectually dishonest.
The deeper question, however, lies in why such criticism is being directed specifically at Mohan Majhi. Is it because he's not from an elite background? Is it uncomfortable for some to see a humble tribal leader, once among the poorest of the poor, walking into a 5-star venue as the Chief Minister of Odisha?
This criticism reeks of a classist mindset - one that would never question the same actions if done by leaders born into privilege, like the opposition BJD members.
It seems clear that certain elites and opposition voices are uncomfortable with a tribal man rising to the top, let alone presenting his state on an equal footing with corporate titans. They want the poor to remain poor - not just in material terms, but also in dignity and presence.
CM Majhi's track record speaks for itself. Since taking office, he has delivered on several promises left unfulfilled by the previous regime, especially in areas like tribal welfare, rural infrastructure and healthcare access. His government has actively focused on the upliftment of marginalised communities, and he continues to be known as the "people's CM" - accessible, grounded and driven by public service.
The Bottom Line
While austerity is a virtue in public life, representation and dignity matter when showcasing the strength of your state. Hosting guests, forging partnerships and inviting investment require projecting confidence and competence - and CM Mohan Majhi has only done what any responsible leader would: put the best foot forward for Odisha, not for himself.
