Red Sea Freedom of Navigation

During their extensive discussions at a luxurious palace on Thursday, Modi and Macron addressed the critical situation in the Red Sea. With the Houthi militants launching attacks on merchant vessels since November, allegedly in response to Israel's military actions in Gaza, the leaders recognized the substantial economic impact of the conflict.

They reiterated the paramount importance of upholding freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and respecting international maritime law. The statement highlighted their detailed conversations aimed at coordinating efforts in the region to address these concerns.

Condemnation of Terrorist Attacks

Modi and Macron strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Israel on October 7 and expressed solidarity with the people of Israel. They deplored the significant loss of civilian lives in the ongoing conflict and stressed the necessity of adhering to international humanitarian law. They emphasized the need for a humanitarian ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of aid to the affected population in the Gaza region.

The leaders also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. They reaffirmed their commitment to a political process leading to a two-state solution for the Israeli and Palestinian people, recognizing it as essential for lasting peace and stability in the region.

Concerns Over Ukraine War

Modi and Macron expressed deep concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine and its devastating humanitarian consequences. They underscored the imperative for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine, in accordance with international law and the principles of the UN Charter. They acknowledged the escalating impact of the war on the global economic system and food security, particularly affecting developing and least developed countries.

Combating Terrorism

The two leaders reaffirmed their unequivocal condemnation of terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism. They pledged to stand together in the collective fight against this global menace. Modi and Macron emphasized that no country should provide safe haven to those who finance, plan, support, or commit terrorist acts.

They called for concerted action against all terrorists, including through designations of individuals affiliated with groups listed by the UN Security Council 1267 Sanctions Committee. The leaders also stressed the importance of upholding international standards on anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism, in line with Financial Action Task Force recommendations.

The joint statement reflects the shared concerns and commitments of India and France in addressing regional conflicts, promoting peace and stability, and combating terrorism. Their discussions underscore the importance of international cooperation and adherence to international law in addressing these critical challenges.
