Mizoram CM Vows Unwavering Support for Myanmar Refugees and Manipur IDPs

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma reiterates the states dedication to supporting refugees from Myanmar and internally displaced people from Manipur, with the backing of the Indian government.

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma reaffirmed the state government's commitment to providing assistance to refugees from Myanmar and internally displaced people (IDPs) from Manipur, with the support of the central government. The chief minister made these remarks during a press conference in Aizawl upon his return from Delhi.

Mizoram: A Haven for Myanmar Refugees and Manipur IDPs

Collaboration with the Centre for Relief Efforts

Lalduhoma highlighted that even though the central government cannot grant refugee status to Myanmar nationals, it is willing to collaborate with Mizoram in providing relief to them. Additionally, the chief minister assured that people from Manipur who fled their homes due to ethnic violence will also receive assistance with the help of the central government.

Seeking Shelter in Mizoram

According to official records, more than 31,000 individuals belonging to the Chin community from Myanmar have sought refuge in Mizoram since February 2021, following a military coup in their home country. Furthermore, over 9,000 IDPs from Manipur have also taken shelter in the state.

Ethnic Ties and Central Government's Assurance

The Chin community from Myanmar and the ethnic Kuki-Zo community from Manipur share ethnic ties with the Mizos. In a recent development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed Chief Minister Lalduhoma that the central government will not deport Myanmar nationals who sought refuge in the state since February 2021 until normalcy is restored in Myanmar.

Hope for Cancellation of Border Fencing

Chief Minister Lalduhoma also expressed hope that the central government will reconsider its decision to fence a portion of the India-Myanmar border. The Union government had previously announced plans to fence a 300-kilometer stretch of unfenced boundary with Myanmar and end the Free Movement Regime, which allows people living on both sides of the international border to travel within 16 kilometers into each other's territory without a visa.

Mizoram's continued support for Myanmar refugees and Manipur IDPs, with the assistance of the central government, demonstrates the state's commitment to providing humanitarian aid and ensuring the well-being of those seeking refuge. The chief minister's efforts to engage with the central government and advocate for the needs of these vulnerable populations are crucial in addressing the ongoing challenges and ensuring their safety and well-being.
