MCD Commissioner Directs Delhi Establishments to Implement Dengue Prevention Measures
In a proactive move to combat the annual surge in dengue cases during the monsoon season, MCD Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti has issued a directive to all sectors of the city, including government and private offices, educational institutions, market associations, and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). This initiative aims to implement preventive measures against the spread of dengue by controlling mosquito breeding grounds.

The directive from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) comes as a timely intervention, anticipating the onset of the monsoon season, which typically begins in the last week of June in the national capital. The commissioner's call to action is grounded in concerns over the consistent rise in dengue cases observed every monsoon season.
Highlighting the findings from central cross-checking teams of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme, National Institute of Malaria Research, and MCD, Commissioner Bharti pointed out the alarming levels of Aedes mosquito breeding detected in various government offices, schools, and some residential colonies. These mosquitoes are known vectors for dengue fever, making their control a critical public health priority.
To mitigate this risk, Commissioner Bharti has outlined several key measures. He has mandated that all establishments ensure water tanks or containers are securely covered and that coolers are cleaned on a regular basis. Additionally, he has recommended dedicating one day each week as a 'dry day' for the thorough cleaning of any items that may collect water.
For coolers that cannot be emptied, adding one tablespoon of kerosene oil or petrol is advised to prevent mosquito breeding. The directive also emphasizes the importance of preventing stagnant water accumulation within or around office premises. Furthermore, it mandates providing access to overhead water tanks for Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBCs) to facilitate inspections.
The MCD has warned that it will take stringent action against those found violating these preventive measures aimed at controlling vector-borne diseases. This decisive approach underscores the seriousness with which the MCD is addressing the public health challenge posed by dengue fever ahead of the monsoon season.
This comprehensive strategy not only aims at reducing the incidence of dengue but also serves as a model for collaborative efforts between public authorities and community stakeholders. By taking preemptive action based on past observations and expert recommendations, Delhi aims to safeguard its residents from the health risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases.
