Mayawati Urges Dalit Leaders To Break Ties With Casteist Parties Ahead Of Haryana Elections

On the eve of the Haryana assembly elections, Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), made a bold appeal to Dalit leaders. She urged them to cut off their ties with the Congress and other parties she branded as "casteist." Her statement is seen as an attempt to consolidate a pro-Dalit front in Haryana, in collaboration with the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), offering an alternative to the traditional political establishments that, according to her, have historically marginalized Dalit voices.

Mayawati's critique was not just limited to verbal appeals; she took to X to express her discontent with the Congress and similar parties. In her posts, she highlighted a pattern of behavior where Dalit leaders are seemingly cherished by these parties during challenging times, only to be sidelined once the tide turns in their favor. She articulated, "The political developments in the country so far have proven that the Congress and other casteist parties only remember Dalits during their bad days and appoint them as chief ministers or to other key organisational positions temporarily." This sentiment was further emphasized with her observation of the current political landscape in Haryana, where she accuses these parties of favoring casteist figures over Dalit leaders.

The former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh didn't stop at merely pointing out the flaws she perceives in the Congress and its peers; she also offered a historical reference to underscore her point. Drawing inspiration from Dr. BR Ambedkar's legacy, she invoked his resignation from the post of Union Law Minister as a mark of protest against the mistreatment of Dalits and other marginalized communities. Mayawati paralleled this with her own resignation from the Rajya Sabha in 2017, triggered by her inability to speak on the violence against Dalits in Saharanpur. "Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar resigned from the post of Union law minister for the sake of self-respect and dignity of the weaker sections. Inspired by him, I also resigned from the Rajya Sabha when I wasn't allowed to speak on the atrocities against Dalits in Saharanpur. Hence, I advise Dalits to follow in his footsteps," she stated.

By urging Dalit leaders to follow Ambedkar's example, Mayawati is advocating for a political realignment that prioritizes Dalit welfare and dignity over party loyalty. She implores these leaders to distance themselves from entities that have, in her view, exploited their loyalty without offering substantial change or representation in return. "These humiliated Dalit leaders should be inspired by their messiah, Baba Saheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, and detach themselves from these parties. They should also work to keep their communities away from these parties," Mayawati articulated.Furthermore, Mayawati didn't shy away from targeting specific political figures in her criticism. She singled out Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, accusing him and his party of opposing reservation policies that benefit Dalits, backward classes, and other marginalized groups. She recalled an incident where Gandhi allegedly spoke against reservations while overseas, using this to caution against what she perceives as anti-constitutional and anti-reservation sentiments within the Congress and similar parties.
