Mamata Banerjees Balurghat Bombshell: BSF Accused of Voter Manipulation

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee stirred controversy by accusing the BSF of influencing voters in the Balurghat election. She emphasized the importance of protecting citizenship rights and urged migrant laborers to exercise their voting rights.

Raiganj/Balurghat, West Bengal: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made serious allegations against the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding voter management and the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). In a public distribution program held in Balurghat, Dakshin Dinajpur district, Banerjee accused the BSF of manipulating voters during the previous election in the Balurghat Lok Sabha constituency, which is represented by BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar.

BSF's Alleged Voter Management

Banerjee expressed concern over reports that the BSF had managed voters standing in queues during the last election in Balurghat. She questioned the authority under which the BSF took such actions, emphasizing that the responsibility for conducting elections lies with the Election Commission, District Magistrates (DMs), and Superintendents of Police (SPs).

Caution Against Identity Cards Issued by BSF

In a separate incident, Banerjee raised concerns about reports that the BSF was issuing identity cards to residents in border areas. She directed the DMs to issue work permit cards for individuals who cross the border for work-related purposes. The Chief Minister cautioned people against accepting such cards, warning that they could potentially lead to entrapment in the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Opposition to NRC and CAA

Banerjee strongly opposed the BJP's attempts to bring up issues like the NRC, CAA, and Uniform Civil Code ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. She asserted that these issues were merely political tactics and that her government had already granted citizenship to everyone, including those living in border areas. She reiterated her firm stance against the implementation of NRC in West Bengal, declaring that she would not allow anyone's citizenship to be taken away as long as she was alive.

BJP's Response

In response to Banerjee's statements, the state BJP asserted that the CAA is a law of the land and cannot be prevented from being implemented. Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha criticized Banerjee for making confusing statements about NRC implementation and pointed out that the Centre had never mentioned anything about NRC.

Allegations of Food Restrictions in BJP-Ruled States

Banerjee also made allegations against BJP-ruled states, claiming that people were not allowed to consume non-vegetarian food in those regions. She cited examples of shops being demolished using bulldozers in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. In contrast, she highlighted that her government in West Bengal respected people's freedom of choice.

Call for Unity Against Political Alliance

Banerjee urged the people of West Bengal to unite under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) banner to counter the alleged alliance formed by the Congress, CPI(M), and the BJP in the state. She emphasized that the TMC was fighting for the rights of the people and called for unity to defeat the opposition alliance.

Financial Issues with the Central Government

Banerjee further raised concerns about the central government's delay in clearing funds due to West Bengal under various schemes. She issued an ultimatum until February 1, threatening to hold a sit-in protest if the dues were not cleared.

Mamata Banerjee's recent statements have sparked controversy and highlighted ongoing tensions between the TMC-led state government and the BJP-led central government. Her allegations against the BSF, opposition to the CAA and NRC, and criticism of BJP-ruled states have added to the political discourse in West Bengal as the state prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
