Maharashtra: Doctors to resume work today, IMA says false news
The strike was sparked by an incident last week when relatives of a patient who died beat up a resident doctor at Mumbai's Sion Hospital.
Mumbai, March 22: After meeting Maharashtra medical education minister Girish Mahajan, doctors who have been on strike have agreed to resume work by 8 pm on Wednesday.
State medical education minister Girish Mahajan said after meeting the doctors that, "After meeting me, doctors have agreed to resume work by 8 pm." He added that, "Assured doctors that we will take strong steps for their security and measures will be in place in 15 days."
The doctors were supported by Indian Association's Maharashtra chapter. The association had expressed deep pain at the recent spate of events of unabated violence against doctors.
As the news of doctors calling off the strike broke, Dr Parthiv Sanghvi of IMA told media that the news is absolutely false and misguiding. He said doctors have not taken their strike back and that they are supporting strike completely.
Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicine official in a late night statement said that almost 80,000 BAMS doctors are not taking part in onging strike.
The doctors had been asked to resume work by 8 pm on Wednesday or risk losing six months' salary. Over 4,000 resident doctors across Maharashtra had been agitating against dangerous conditions at the hospitals.
The strike was sparked by an incident last week when relatives of a patient who died beat up a resident doctor at Mumbai's Sion Hospital.
Girish Mahajan had promised the doctors that the government will provide 500 guards to civic-run hospitals within five days and 600 guards within 20 days and 1,100 guards within a month.
