Maharashtra Chief Minister Orders Crackdown on Illegal Hoardings
In a decisive move to enhance urban safety and aesthetics, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has mandated the removal of all illegal hoardings across Mumbai and other regions of the state. This directive also includes a comprehensive structural audit of legally installed hoardings to ensure their stability and compliance. The announcement came during Shinde's visit to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters, where he was assessing the monsoon preparedness efforts within the city.

Addressing concerns raised by the recent Ghatkopar hoarding tragedy, which resulted in 17 fatalities due to a hoarding collapse amid strong winds and unexpected rains on May 13, Shinde reiterated his commitment to preventing such incidents. He emphasized the importance of strict enforcement actions, including filing FIRs against violators, to deter the erection of illegal and hazardous hoardings.
Furthermore, Shinde highlighted ongoing efforts to mitigate monsoon-related challenges, such as waterlogging, which often plagues Mumbai during the rainy season. He has instructed the civic body to intensify nullah (stormwater drain) cleaning operations to ensure unobstructed water flow. The chief minister stressed that silt removed from nullahs should be promptly disposed of away from water bodies to prevent re-sedimentation.
The chief minister's directives reflect a proactive approach towards urban management, especially in anticipation of monsoon-related issues. Shinde warned of stringent actions against agencies found culpable of contributing to waterlogging through inadequate project execution or maintenance. He underscored the collective responsibility of all agencies involved in city management to work synergistically towards achieving a 'zero casualty mission' during the monsoon season.
This initiative by the Maharashtra government signifies a critical step towards ensuring public safety and enhancing the urban landscape's visual appeal. By addressing both illegal hoardings and monsoon preparedness, the state aims to safeguard its citizens against potential hazards while promoting a more organized and aesthetically pleasing urban environment.
