Mahakumbh 2025: Over 1 Crore Devotees Take Amrit Snan At Sangam On Makar Sankranti | Key Highlights & Updates
The sacred city of Prayagraj has become the epicentre of divine fervour as the Mahakumbh Mela 2025 officially commenced with an overwhelming surge of devotees. Over 1 crore pilgrims have already taken a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, the revered confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.
The first 'Amrit Snan', a momentous event in the grand spiritual congregation, is taking place today on Makar Sankranti. With millions expected to participate, the event marks the beginning of a 45-day-long religious celebration that is steeped in tradition, faith, and divine rituals.

The Divine Significance of Amrit Snan
The Mahakumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, is the world's largest religious gathering, drawing saints, sadhus, and devotees from across the globe. The Amrit Snan, formerly known as the Shahi Snan, is the most revered ritual, symbolizing spiritual purification and moksha (liberation).
This year's first Amrit Snan is particularly momentous, as it comes in the wake of the grand 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony of Lord Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, amplifying the spiritual energy of the event.
A Grand Spiritual Procession
At the break of dawn, the holy banks of the Sangam came alive with chants of "Har Har Gange" as thousands of Naga Sadhus, draped in ash and adorned with rudraksha beads, led the majestic Amrit Snan procession. Their entry into the sacred waters marked the beginning of a day filled with faith, devotion, and ritualistic grandeur.
Shri Panchayati Akhara Mahanirvani and Shri Shambhu Panchayati Atal Akhara were the first to take the Amrit Snan, starting their journey from the Akhara camps at 5:15 AM, reaching the ghat by 6:15 AM, and completing their sacred dip by 6:55 AM.
Transforming Tradition: New Names for Ancient Rituals
In a historic shift, the terminologies associated with the Kumbh have been revised. 'Shahi Snan' is now referred to as 'Amrit Snan', while 'Peshwai' has been renamed 'Chhavni Pravesh', as confirmed by Mahant Ravindra Puri, the President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad.
This renaming is aimed at reviving and reinforcing the spiritual ethos of the event, aligning it with India's cultural renaissance.

A Sacred Commitment to Faith
The significance of the Mahakumbh extends beyond rituals. It is a testament to unwavering faith, drawing together spiritual leaders, saints, and seekers from across sects and traditions.
Many devotees who participated in the Paush Poornima Snan have remained in Prayagraj to partake in the Makar Sankranti Amrit Snan, further highlighting the deep spiritual dedication of pilgrims.
