Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi to Succeed Gen Manoj Pande as India's Army Chief

Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi has been officially designated as the next Chief of the Army Staff, a pivotal announcement made by the government on Tuesday night. This decision puts an end to the widespread speculation surrounding this significant appointment. Lt Gen Dwivedi, who is currently the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, will take over from Gen Manoj Pande, who is set to retire on June 30. The government's choice to appoint Lt Gen Dwivedi is in line with the principle of seniority.

Upendra Dwivedi New Army Chief

The Defence Ministry confirmed that Lt Gen Dwivedi's appointment as the Chief of the Army Staff will be effective from the afternoon of June 30. This announcement comes after an unusual extension was granted to Gen Pande's tenure last month, just days before his scheduled retirement, sparking discussions about the potential for Lt Gen Dwivedi to be bypassed for the role.

Lt Gen Dwivedi brings to the position a wealth of operational experience from India's frontiers with China and Pakistan. Before his role as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, he served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command, overseeing key operations from 2022 to 2024. His military career, spanning nearly four decades since his commissioning into 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on December 15, 1984, includes a variety of command, staff, instructional, and foreign appointments.

His leadership roles have been diverse, including commanding the regiment 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, Brigade 26 Sector Assam Rifles, serving as Inspector General, Assam Rifles East, and leading 9 Corps. In his tenure as a Lt General, he has held significant positions such as Director General Infantry and has been honoured with prestigious awards including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.

As Northern Army commander, Lt Gen Dwivedi played a crucial role in providing strategic guidance for operations along India's northern and western borders and was instrumental in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir. His efforts in modernising and equipping the largest Army command underscore his commitment to enhancing India's defence capabilities through indigenous means as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Lt Gen Dwivedi's educational background is equally impressive, with an M Phil in Defence and Management Studies and two Masters Degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science. His academic journey includes stints at prestigious institutions such as the National Defence College and US Army War College.

The transition of leadership comes at a time when both Lt Gen Dwivedi and his senior-most colleague, Lt Gen Ajay Kumar Singh, were slated for retirement on June 30. The policy allows service chiefs to serve until the age of 62 or for three years, whichever comes first, while the retirement age for Lt General rank officers is 60 unless appointed to a four-star rank.

Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi's appointment marks a significant moment in India's military leadership, reflecting both his extensive experience and the government's confidence in his abilities to lead the Indian Army into future challenges.
