Lord Jagannath and Deities Return to Main Temple Following Annual Rath Yatra Ritual

The annual Rath Yatra concluded with the Niladri Bije ritual, marking the return of Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath to their temple. This event took place 12 days after the festival began on June 27. The deities had travelled to Shree Gundicha Temple, located about three kilometres from the main shrine.

Lord Jagannath Returns After Rath Yatra

During the Niladri Bije ceremony, the deities were brought back to the temple's sanctum sanctorum through a procession known as "Pahandi." They had been waiting on their chariots since the Bahuda Yatra on July 5. The procession started with Shree Sudarshan, followed by Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra, and finally Lord Jagannath.

Rituals and Traditions

As Lord Jagannath was being taken inside, his consort Maha Laxmi blocked his path. She was upset because she had not been included in the Rath Yatra. To appease her, Lord Jagannath offered Rasagolla and a costly saree. This interaction is known as Laxmi-Narayan Kali, symbolising a quarrel between the divine couple.

The ritual concluded when Maha Laxmi allowed Lord Jagannath to enter the temple. Thousands of devotees witnessed this symbolic quarrel between the deity and his consort. The event is a significant part of the festival's conclusion, drawing many local attendees.

Devotee Participation

The Rath Yatra festivities attracted lakhs of devotees from across India. They participated in various events such as Bahuda Yatra, Suna Besha where deities are adorned in golden attire, and Adhar Pana, a sweet drink offering. These events are integral to the celebration's grandeur.

Unfortunately, during the Rath Yatra on June 29, a stampede occurred near Shree Gundicha Temple. This tragic incident resulted in three deaths and injuries to 50 others. In response, the state government has initiated an administrative inquiry to investigate what happened.

The Niladri Bije ritual is a significant cultural event that marks the end of the Rath Yatra. It reflects deep-rooted traditions and attracts numerous devotees who come to witness these sacred ceremonies each year.
