Lok Sabha Elections See Major Strategy Shift Due To Intense Heatwave

Elections are a time of intense activity and debate among political leaders. However, this election season is facing a unique challenge due to the extreme heat. Traditionally, elections in India, whether for the Assembly or Lok Sabha, are held in May. This timing means politicians are usually active throughout the day, starting their engagements after 10 am and wrapping up by evening.

But the current heatwave has disrupted this routine significantly. Politicians are now completing their tasks by 8 am to avoid the midday heat and only resuming their activities after 6 pm. This shift is a departure from past elections, where occasional drizzles in April and May would offer some respite from the heat. Now, the relentless sun starts scorching as early as 7 am and doesn't let up even by late evening.

Elections Adapt to Heatwave in India

In Tamil Nadu, the situation is particularly severe, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Fahrenheit in several places. This has affected campaign efforts in cities like Erode, Coimbatore, Chennai, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, and Kanyakumari. As a result, all political parties in Tamil Nadu have had to adjust their campaign schedules to cope with the weather conditions.

With summer at its peak, politicians are finding innovative ways to connect with voters while avoiding the worst of the heat. Campaign activities now start early in the morning, between 6 am and 9 am, involving walks, serving tea at local shops, and even selling vegetables in markets. Evening campaigns now begin after 4 pm using open vehicles or meeting people during their evening walks. In between, loudspeakers on vehicles are used for campaigning.

To make the most of the time when outdoor campaigning is not feasible due to the heat, political parties are focusing on indoor activities. They're holding meetings in their offices, engaging with party functionaries, and discussing strategies with alliance partners. This adjustment in campaign strategies shows how parties are adapting to continue their electoral efforts despite challenging weather conditions.
