Delhi LG VK Saxena Evaluates Impact of Heavy Rains on City

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena inspected the city's most flood-affected areas and drainage systems to evaluate the damage caused by heavy rains, according to an official statement released on Saturday. Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj also visited East Kidwai Nagar and Golf Links to address waterlogging issues, despite these areas being under the Central government-controlled NDMC, the Delhi government stated.

Delhi LG Reviews Rain Impact

During his inspections, Saxena found that all the drains were heavily clogged with garbage, debris, and sludge, leading to severe flooding in various parts of the city. At Taimur Nagar Drain, under the Municipal Corporation Department, he observed significant silt and garbage deposits blocking water flow, causing major flooding in areas like Okhla, Taimur Nagar, Shaheen Bagh, Jasola, Bharat Nagar, Jamia Nagar, and nearby upscale colonies such as New Friends Colony and Maharani Bagh.

Inspection of Key Areas

Saxena was accompanied by Chief Secretary cum Chairman NDMC, Commissioner MCD, Principal Secretary PWD, and other senior officials during his inspection of drains at Taimur Nagar, Barapulla Drain, ITPO, Tilak Bridge, Kushak Nallah, Golf Links, and Bharti Nagar. Union Minister and East Delhi MP Harsh Malhotra and New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj also joined him during his visits to their respective areas.

At ITPO and Tilak Bridge drains maintained by the Public Welfare Department, Saxena discovered similar issues with clogged drains due to garbage and debris dumping. This resulted in water backflow and flooding along the entire stretch around ITO. Locals in Kushak Nallah, Golf Links, and Bharti Nagar also reported choked drains and sewer lines.

Immediate Actions Ordered

Saxena directed New Delhi Municipal Committee officials to immediately desilt the drains and deploy additional pumps as needed to clear waterlogging during heavy rains. He issued strict instructions to remove all garbage, debris, and sludge from the drains within three to four days and report completion with photographic and video evidence.

Expressing his displeasure over the negligence observed during his visits, Saxena warned that any further oversight would be taken seriously. He emphasized that strict action would be taken against responsible officials if such negligence continued. Saxena highlighted the need for a comprehensive water drainage plan for Delhi to prevent future incidents of waterlogging.

Future Plans for Water Management

The Delhi government mentioned that plans are underway for a comprehensive roadmap to prevent future waterlogging. Saxena stressed the importance of long-term strategies rather than ad-hoc crisis management measures. He noted that his administration has prioritized monsoon preparedness from day one to ensure minimal inconvenience to the public.

Bharadwaj also discussed the overflowing Barapullah drain with the central government. The relevant agency has been directed to clean it. Despite these areas falling under NDMC control, Bharadwaj's visit aimed at resolving waterlogging issues effectively.

The IMD has predicted heavy rain for the next four days in Delhi. Consequently, an orange alert has been issued for the city. This forecast underscores the urgency of addressing drainage issues promptly to mitigate potential flooding risks.

Saxena's inspections revealed severe blockages in several key drainage systems across Delhi. His directives aim at immediate action to clear these blockages and establish a more effective long-term drainage strategy for the capital.
