‘Laughable’: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Wife Slams Congress Over Foreign Assets Claim

With Assam heading into a politically charged week ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, a fresh war of words has erupted between the BJP and Congress, this time centred around allegations involving chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma. Rejecting claims that she holds foreign passports or has overseas assets, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma has publicly slammed the Opposition's charges as "laughable" and turned the attack back on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.

Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, denied Congress allegations of holding foreign passports and overseas assets, calling them "laughable" and counter-accusing MP Gaurav Gogoi. CM Sarma refuted the claims as fabricated documents and announced legal action against the Congress leaders.

Riniki Bhuyan Sharma Rejects Congress Charges, Calls Them 'Laughable'

Breaking her silence on Monday, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma issued a strong response on X, directly addressing the allegations made by Congress leaders. She firmly denied that she or her family had any business interests or assets outside India.

"I'll save you the suspense and answer these laughable questions myself," she wrote on X. "Neither I, nor my children, nor my husband have any business interests or assets in Dubai or anywhere outside India."

Her statement came as the controversy intensified in the run-up to the Assam Assembly elections, with Congress leaders trying to corner the chief minister over claims linked to foreign passports, Dubai properties and alleged overseas financial interests.

Fresh Counterattack On Gaurav Gogoi Over Pakistan Bank Account Claim

Riniki Bhuyan Sharma did not stop at denying the allegations. In a sharp counter, she questioned Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi over an earlier controversy involving his wife and alleged links to Pakistan.

"Can you disclose whether your wife has or has ever had a bank account in Pakistan? And will you make those details public?"

Her remarks came against the backdrop of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's earlier allegations that Gogoi's wife had "several" bank accounts in Pakistan, with some allegedly still active. Gogoi had denied those accusations at the time and described them as politically motivated.

The exchange has now added a deeply personal layer to the BJP-Congress face-off, turning the election narrative into a high-stakes political slugfest.

What Congress Alleged About Riniki Bhuyan Sharma

The latest controversy began after Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi raised a series of questions on Sunday regarding Riniki Bhuyan Sharma's alleged foreign links.

They claimed that Sarma's wife held passports from the UAE, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda, and also owned properties in Dubai. The Congress leaders further alleged that she had connections to a company in Wyoming in the United States and possessed foreign assets that were not disclosed in election-related filings.

"Does the wife of Himanta Sarma hold a Golden visa for Dubai?" Gaurav Gogoi wrote on X. "Is the Golden visa on an Indian passport?"

Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, however, accused Gogoi of changing his stand within a day. According to her, the Congress MP first suggested there was a "golden visa on an Egyptian passport" and later shifted to claiming it was linked to an Indian passport, which she cited as proof of inconsistency in the allegations.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Threatens Legal Action, Calls Documents Fake

Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also launched a forceful rebuttal, saying his wife had already filed a police complaint against Congress leader Pawan Khera over the allegations. He warned that the matter would not end with political sparring and said strict legal action was being pursued.

He said they were seeking "life imprisonment."

Sarma further alleged that the documents circulated by the Congress were fabricated and sourced from a Facebook group called "Pakistanis in Ajman." According to him, the records cited by the Opposition were not credible and had been created to manufacture a controversy.

The Assam chief minister also rejected claims that his family had floated a ₹52,000 crore company in Wyoming, calling the documents fake and misleading. To demonstrate how easy it was to create such records, he said a similar company was registered overnight in the names of Gaurav Gogoi and his wife.

"On Sunday night, we also registered a fake LLC in the same state in their names. It can be done by anyone by paying just $199 (around ₹20,000). This shows how easily such documents can be generated," Sarma said at a press conference.

He also highlighted what he described as glaring inconsistencies in the Congress documents, pointing out that they referred to a company meeting in 2025 even though official Wyoming records allegedly showed the company had been registered only two days earlier.

Passport Allegations Also Dismissed By Assam CM

Sarma also dismissed the passport-related accusations levelled against his wife, saying the documents being cited did not stand scrutiny.

According to the chief minister, the alleged UAE document was based on a lost passport, the Egyptian passport details belonged to someone else, and the Antigua and Barbuda passport documents contained obvious errors.

With both sides now trading increasingly serious charges, the controversy has become one of the sharpest flashpoints in Assam's pre-election politics. As the campaign enters its crucial phase, the BJP and Congress appear set to keep this battle alive, with personal allegations and legal threats now taking centre stage.
