Kolkata's Durga Puja Carnival Showcases 89 Committees While Junior Doctors Protest Nearby

A vibrant display of over 85 award-winning Durga Puja committees took place on Red Road, Kolkata, with the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and several diplomats. The event, known as the 'Durga Puja Carnival,' showcased decorated tableaux of the goddess in a grand procession. Simultaneously, junior doctors held a protest carnival at Rani Rashmoni Road, voicing their grievances over an incident at RG Kar hospital.

Durga Puja Carnival and Doctors Protest in Kolkata

The 'Durga Puja Carnival' has been an annual event since 2016, celebrating various themes like Bengal's cultural heritage, women's empowerment, and communal harmony. The carnival's significance was elevated when UNESCO recognised Bengal's Durga Puja as an intangible cultural heritage in 2021. This year, 89 puja committees participated, including notable ones like Forward Club and Santoshpur Trikon Park.

International Recognition and Participation

The carnival attracted diplomats from various countries and foreign tourists, highlighting its international appeal. "By now, the festival is international," said Mamata Banerjee in a post on X. She expressed gratitude to the spectators who witnessed the grand finale of the Durga Puja festival. The event featured music, dance, and performances that captivated both locals and visitors.

The state-sponsored event began at 4:45 pm and continued until 9:15 pm. Thousands gathered to enjoy the spectacle, cheering for the performances and artistic displays. Kolkata Police ensured security with personnel stationed along the route and drones monitoring from above. Folk artists also contributed to the cultural showcase with traditional drum beats.

Protest Carnival by Junior Doctors

Meanwhile, junior doctors initiated their 'Droher Carnival' from Rani Rashmoni Road after the Calcutta High Court lifted prohibitory orders near Red Road. The protest aimed to seek justice for a medic from RG Kar hospital who was raped and murdered in August. Debasish Halder, a protesting doctor, criticised the government's lack of response to their demands.

The hunger strike by medics began on October 5, reflecting widespread discontent with the state's handling of the situation. Participants from diverse backgrounds joined the rally to support the doctors' cause. "This is a response from the common people who want to protest against the West Bengal government's insensitive approach," Halder stated.

The Durga Puja Carnival's procession on Red Road featured members of various clubs dancing and singing along to traditional music. The colourful display of devotion and artistry drew admiration from all attendees. Despite the concurrent protest, the carnival proceeded smoothly under tight security measures.

The dual events on Red Road highlighted contrasting aspects of West Bengal's socio-cultural landscape. While one celebrated tradition and unity through art and culture, the other underscored pressing social issues demanding attention. Both events drew significant public interest and participation in Kolkata.
