Kerala Couple Commits Suicide Due to Son's Drug Addiction

An elderly couple allegedly took their own lives by setting themselves on fire inside their car on Friday, unable to cope with their son's drug addiction, according to police. The charred remains of Raju Thomas George, 69, and Laigy Thomas, 63, were discovered in their vehicle.

The couple's identities were confirmed through the car's registration number found near the field. A suicide note was recovered from their home, indicating that they could no longer manage their 39-year-old son's addiction. He is currently in a private rehabilitation centre in Thodupuzha, Idukki District.

The note addressed to the police requested that their son be admitted to a government institution for treatment. It also stated that their assets should be transferred to their daughter-in-law and granddaughter. "They have requested to admit their son in a government institution for treatment. Locals informed the media that Raju had returned to his hometown after working abroad for many years. The blaze was noticed by a patrol team from a distance near a field at Vengal, police added. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.
