Katra Ropeway Project: High-Level Committee Discusses Stakeholder Concerns with Sangarsh Samiti

A high-level committee from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board recently met with Sangarsh Samiti members to discuss the proposed ropeway project. The project aims to enhance pilgrim comfort and increase visitor numbers. However, a final decision will only be made after consulting all stakeholders. This meeting follows two earlier discussions held on May 9, 2023, and February 15, 2024.

Katra Ropeway Project Meeting with Sangarsh Samiti

The committee, which includes former Director General of Police Dr. Ashok Bhan, is focused on addressing concerns about the ropeway project. They aim to alleviate apprehensions and ensure that all voices are heard before proceeding. The committee emphasised that ongoing consultations are crucial for making an informed decision.

Stakeholder Concerns and Project Impact

Concerns have been raised about the project's impact on local businesses and the sanctity of the traditional track. Stakeholders worry that the new infrastructure might affect livelihoods tied to shops and services along the existing route. The committee assured that reduced turnaround times for pilgrims could lead to more time spent in Katra town, potentially benefiting local businesses.

Another significant concern is the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway's extension to Tarakote. Stakeholders fear this could harm local commerce in Katra town. They urged for its termination at the Inter Modal Station in Katra to mitigate potential negative impacts.

Development Initiatives and Future Plans

The Shrine Board is committed to holistic development in Katra and the Shrine area, focusing on both pilgrimage enhancement and economic growth. Several projects have been completed, with more planned to boost local economy and pilgrimage experiences. Key initiatives include rejuvenating the Banganga rivulet for ecological and aesthetic improvements.

To further enrich spiritual experiences, plans are underway for a Banganga Arti and Multimedia Laser Show at the rivulet's embankment. Additionally, new facilities like Shubhra Bhawan Yatri facilitation centre and Queue Complexes at Darshani Deodi are being developed to aid pilgrims.

Commitment to Transparency and Collaboration

Dr. Bhan highlighted the committee's dedication to transparency and cooperation with stakeholders. The meeting underscored their commitment to collaboratively address pressing issues while ensuring Katra's development alongside the Shrine area.

The meeting included prominent Sangarsh Samiti members such as Ajay Nanda, Vimal Indu, Sohan Singh, Ravi Nag, Karan Singh, Rajesh Sadotra, Raman Singh, Rajneesh, Sunil Sharma, Beli Ram, Jugal Kishore, Verinder Kesar, and Surinder Sharma.

The Shrine Board had previously announced plans for a Rs 250-crore ropeway project in November last year. This initiative aims to connect Tarakote Marg to Sanjichhat in Reasi district, improving access for senior citizens and children who find it challenging to climb the 13-km track to the cave shrine.
