In a significant development, 1983 families residing in the Professional Grazing Reserve and Village Grazing Reserve in Karbi Anglong, Assam, are facing eviction due to alleged encroachment. The decision was taken at a meeting of various political, social, and student organizations held on Tuesday, as confirmed by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Councils Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang.
In a significant development, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) has decided to evict 1983 families residing in Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) and Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) lands in the Karbi Anglong region of Assam. This decision was taken at a meeting of various political, social, and student organizations held on Tuesday, February 20, 2023, in Diphu, Assam.

The decision to evict the encroaching families stems from a recent clash between members of two communities over land settlement in the PGR and VGR areas of West Karbi Anglong district. The clash resulted in injuries to seven individuals and the arrest of 17 others. To address this issue and uphold the Supreme Court's orders, the KAAC has resolved to take action against illegal occupants of these lands.
Details of the Eviction Process
The KAAC, led by Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang, will initiate the eviction process by issuing notices to the encroachers, starting from February 21, 2023. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for eviction will be prepared, and a special task force will be formed to carry out the eviction of illegal occupants from the PGR-VGR lands in Fuloni, Diphu, Shilonijan, and Dongkamokam regions.
Rehabilitation Measures
Recognizing the need for compassion, the KAAC has also outlined plans for the rehabilitation of the evicted persons. Measures will be taken in a phased manner to provide support and assistance to those affected by the eviction.
Cancellation of Government-Appointed Village Heads
In addition to the eviction process, the KAAC has decided to cancel the appointment of government-appointed village heads in the PGR-VGR region. This step aims to ensure proper land management and prevent further encroachment.
Collaboration with State Government
The KAAC acknowledges that law and order fall under the jurisdiction of the state government. Therefore, the eviction process will be carried out in consultation and collaboration with the state government to ensure a smooth and lawful implementation.
The decision by the KAAC to evict 1983 families from PGR and VGR lands in the Karbi Anglong region is a significant step towards addressing land encroachment and maintaining law and order. By following the Supreme Court's orders and implementing a structured eviction process, the KAAC aims to resolve land disputes, prevent future conflicts, and ensure the well-being of all communities in the region.
